SEO for Shopify: get your products and collections to show up on Google

SEO for Shopify works within the rules of the platform: a URL structure that cannot be changed, products that appear in several collections, apps that add weight to the store and a theme that decides a good part of the markup. At Pivoti Labs we optimize what Shopify does let you change, which is quite a lot more than it seems.

Having your store on Shopify is not the same as having SEO

The platform covers the basics. Rankings depend on how the store is configured and filled in.

The problem

A good-looking store that Google never quite ranks

Shopify handles the basic technical side, and that is why many stores assume the SEO is already done. These are the problems that come up most often.

  1. Products on several paths

The same product can be viewed from the URL of every collection it appears in. If internal links point to those variants, the signal toward the main URL gets diluted.

  2. Apps that add weight

Every review, chat, pop-up or upsell app adds scripts to every page. Many keep loading code even after being uninstalled.

  3. Copied descriptions

Manufacturer texts repeated across dozens of stores. Google has no reason to prefer yours.

  4. Collections with no content

Collection pages with only a product grid, with no text explaining what they contain or which search they answer.

How the platform works

What can and cannot be changed in Shopify?

Shopify fixes part of the structure: products live under /products/, collections under /collections/ and pages under /pages/, and those prefixes cannot be removed. There is no server access either. That does not prevent ranking well: titles, descriptions, content, the theme, redirects and even the robots.txt file can all be edited.

That is why the work focuses on what carries the most weight within that framework: your own content on products and collections, clean internal linking, a lightweight theme and complete structured data. To decide whether Shopify is the right platform for your business, the comparison of Wix and Shopify versus your own site helps you see the pros and cons.

Where to start if the store is new?

With the collection structure. Deciding from the start how products are grouped according to how your customer searches for them avoids rebuilding the store later. Then come the pages of the products you sell the most or that leave the most margin, and finally supporting content such as buying guides. The guide to creating an online store in Colombia explains the earlier steps.

The work areas of SEO for Shopify

Every change is made within what the platform allows: the theme, the store settings and the content.

  • Structure and internal linking

Collections organized around how your customer searches, and internal links pointing to the main URL of each product.

  • Product pages

Your own titles, descriptions and image alt texts, written for the search behind each product and not copied from the manufacturer.

  • Collections that rank

Useful text on every important collection: what it contains, who it is for and how to choose, without pushing the products out of view.

  • Speed and apps

We review every installed app, remove the code left behind by uninstalled ones and optimize the theme's images and assets.

  • Structured data

Product markup with price, availability and reviews, validated so Google can show rich results.

  • Indexing

We check in Search Console which pages Google indexes, adjust the theme's robots.txt when needed and keep filter URLs under control.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Yes. It handles the technical basics (sitemap, canonicals, security certificate) and lets you edit titles, descriptions, content, redirects and robots.txt. Its fixed parts are the URL structure and server access.

Can I remove /products/ or /collections/ from my URLs?

No. Shopify does not allow those prefixes to be changed. It is not a problem for ranking: what matters is the content and the linking of each page.

Do apps affect my store's SEO?

Yes, mostly because of speed. Every app adds code to the store, and some leave it behind even when uninstalled. It is worth reviewing what each one contributes.

Do I have to rewrite every product description?

Not all at once. Start with the products you sell the most or that leave the most margin, and move forward by priority. Descriptions copied from the manufacturer compete against every store using the same text.

Which plan includes SEO for Shopify?

Any of the SEO plans applies to Shopify stores; the difference is in the number of keywords and the volume of content. The figures are on the pricing page.
